MCP becomes an open standard: AI agents lose vendor lock-in

On December 9, 2025, Anthropic donated Model Context Protocol (MCP) to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) - a directed fund under the Linux Foundation, co-founded by Anthropic, Block and OpenAI, backed by Google, Microsoft, AWS, Cloudflare and Bloomberg. MCP is the open standard that connects AI agents to external tools, data and systems. Through the first half of 2026, every major platform (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Cursor, VS Code) shipped first-class MCP support: over 97 million SDK downloads a month and more than 10,000 active servers. What just happened with MCP?
