What can an AI Agent do? 9 jobs beyond the Q&A chatbot

When most business owners hear "AI Agent", they picture a chat window answering customers. That picture is right - but it is one ninth of the story. Here are all nine jobs an agent can take on, and a worked example that chains five of them into one process.

TL;DR

An AI Agent handles 9 jobs in 3 groups. Sales & customers: (1) advising and closing 24/7, (2) booking and reminders, (3) lead qualification and nurturing. Operations & back office: (4) invoice and paperwork data entry, (5) internal assistance for staff, (6) multi-step workflows via n8n/Make/APIs. Marketing & data: (7) on-brand content writing, (8) post-sale care and upsells, (9) turning conversations into automatic reports. The core difference from a chatbot: a chatbot talks, an agent acts on real tools - calendars, CRMs, inventory, APIs.

The line that matters: talking vs doing

Old-generation chatbots take a question, look up a script, return text - and stop. Everything after the answer (writing the booking down, creating the order, alerting the right person) is still typed by a human. An AI Agent crosses that line: it is granted permission to act on the tools your business already runs - it writes appointments into Google Calendar, creates orders in the CRM, calls the shipping carrier's API, pings Telegram. We compared the two in detail in What is an AI Agent; this article lists what that "acting" part unlocks.

Group 1 · Sales & customers

1. Advise and close 24/7. The familiar job: read intent, suggest the right product, quote, and close inside the inbox - at 2 AM too. It is where most businesses start, because after-hours orders are a number nobody can argue with.

2. Booking and reminders. For spas, clinics, salons and consultants, the agent slots appointments into the calendar, sends reminders before each visit and reschedules when the customer is busy. No-show rates drop because nothing depends on the receptionist's memory.

3. Qualify and nurture leads. A few well-chosen questions sort hot from cold, data lands in the CRM with labels, and silent leads get a follow-up message after 3-7 days. Your sales team only touches leads that are already warm.

Group 2 · Operations & back office

4. Data entry and paperwork. The agent reads invoices, purchase orders and order messages, fills them into Google Sheets or the CRM, and reconciles the numbers at day's end. The most error-prone, least loved job simply disappears.

5. Internal assistant for staff. Not every agent faces customers. An internal one answers staff about processes, policies and stock, and drafts quotes or template contracts in seconds - new hires stop asking the whole company questions everyone has answered before.

6. Multi-step workflows. The most "agentic" job: wired to n8n, Make or APIs, the agent runs a whole chain - new order → shipping label → Telegram alert → stock update - with nobody clicking anything. We compared the two platforms in n8n vs Make (Vietnamese).

Group 3 · Marketing & data

7. On-brand content writing. Trained on your brand voice, the agent drafts posts, care emails and product descriptions - humans approve and polish. Output speeds up without the voice drifting.

8. Post-sale care and upsells. After delivery the agent checks in, asks for a review, and suggests a repurchase at the right point in the usage cycle. Repeat revenue grows with zero extra ad spend - usually the highest-ROI job, and the least done because "nobody has time to message every customer".

9. Analytics and reporting. Thousands of conversations are a data mine: what customers ask most, where they get stuck, why they decline. The agent compiles it into a weekly report sent via Telegram - five minutes of reading covers the whole week.

A worked example: five jobs, one process

A mid-sized cosmetics shop can chain the jobs like this. A customer messages at 11 PM - the agent advises and closes (job 1). Once closed, it creates the order, calls the shipping API and alerts the owner on Telegram (jobs 4 + 6). Three days after delivery it checks in and asks for a review (job 8). Anyone who didn't buy is labeled and nurtured a week later (job 3). On Monday morning the owner gets the weekly report: conversations, orders, the most repeated question (job 9). One agent runs the entire chain - not five separate tools.

Where to start without biting off all nine

Our rule: pick the most repetitive job you can measure immediately. Online shops pick job 1 (after-hours orders), clinics pick job 2 (count no-shows before and after), B2B teams pick job 3 (count sales-ready leads). Run one job well, then add the next - agents earn promotions like real staff do. The full list with a live demo is on our AI Agent page.

The 9-job framework is distilled from AI Agent projects Chạm AI has deployed for Vietnamese businesses in 2024-2026; grouping and priorities vary by industry.

Frequently asked questions

What can an AI Agent do?

Nine core jobs in three groups. Sales and customers: 24/7 advising and closing, booking and reminders, lead qualification and nurturing. Operations and back office: invoice and paperwork data entry into a CRM, internal assistance for staff, multi-step workflows via n8n/Make/APIs. Marketing and data: on-brand content writing, post-sale care with upsells, and turning conversations into automatic reports.

How is an AI Agent different from a chatbot?

A chatbot replies from a script inside a chat window and stops there. An AI Agent understands context and acts on real tools: it writes to your calendar, creates orders in a CRM, calls shipping APIs and sends reports to Telegram. The boundary is simple: a chatbot talks, an agent does.

Which job should a small business start with?

Pick the most repetitive job you can measure immediately: online shops usually start with after-hours advising and closing; spas and clinics start with booking and reminders; B2B teams start with lead qualification. Get one job running well before adding more - avoid doing all nine at once.
